Two awesome weddings were featured this month in magazine-land: Mairin and Chris’ Dallas wedding at Three Three Three First Avenue and Lisa and Eric’s Austin wedding at The Mohawk. Seeing my work in print never gets old, and I always have to grab at least 2 copies – one to cut up and scan for my blog, and a second copy to send to my mom. She needs frequent, tangible proof that I’m actually doing well enough at this “photography thing” that I can afford to take her out for coffee. I could afford to buy even more coffee if I wasn’t buying 2 copies of all these magazines, but that’s beside the point. A NYE wedding in Carmel…ceremony in a redwood grove…a Michael Jackson glove…what more do you want? Ok, how about a cake face-smash for the ages? I mean, if you’re going to throw a NYE wedding, THIS is how you do it. To top it off, the band performed a world-class rendition of Mark Morrison’s 1996 classic “Return of the Mack.” Bravo, bravo. I can’t think of a better way to ring in the new year…

Who needs photobooth props when you have these 2 adorable little nephews? Picture frames, balloons, chalkboards and fake moustaches are great, but nothing beats a bow-tie adorned baby. Pass ‘em around! Just be careful not to leave them behind as so often happens with the fake moustaches…

That lipstick was supposed to be smudge-proof. SMUDGE-PROOF! That’s ok, I think Tim wears it quite well indeed. It goes well with the green tie, don’t you think? I love that photo more than I can possibly explain…and we didn’t even begin to discuss the yellow shoes.

Alexis and Toby had so many awesome little touches that it’s hard to pick a favorite…the sunglasses, custom Vans, Cubs shout-out on the groom’s cake, honey jars, classic car exit, etc., etc., etc. However, the clear winner of the night was the guest “log.” Amazing….and just what I would expect of a couple that was willing to use a gun and bullwhip as props while sitting on a tractor during their engagement session. Well done.

Jennifer and David clearly did a great job of making Mercury Hall even more awesome than usual…you simply can’t go wrong with gourmet french fries and your own custom wine. And the towels? I hope my towel is absolutely filthy by year’s end. I’ll keep you posted. By the way…the first person to guess which mustache is the real deal is the winner! I’m still working on the prize…

The San Francisco Giants cake was quite impressive indeed…but not nearly as much so as seeing Todd perform emergency surgery on his shirt at T-minus 30 minutes to the ceremony. Talk about clutch! When the tailor slips up, you just have to step up and take charge of the situation. Speaking of shirt issues, one of Todd’s groomsmen had an intentional, ummmm, “wardrobe malfunction” later in the evening, but I’ll save those timeless, priceless photos just for Kelly and Todd…

Wayyyyy back in the fall of 2005, when I was still occasionally shooting on this awful thing called “35mm film” and we all thought that MySpace was the most amazing thing since the Pontiac Aztek, I photographed my very first wedding as a lead photographer, and I was lucky enough to have Villa Antonia as my backdrop. As they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Villa Antonia has changed plenty over the years, but unlike Myspace it’s just gotten better, and without the help of any glitter bling. When you add in a bride and groom that look as amazing as Julia and Brance did on their big day, well, it’s almost as if all of the hard work was taken care of for me…except for hauling around those giant equipment cases, of course.

Usually I’d post something here about my favorite detail or two (or three) from the wedding day, but seriously, I don’t want to go on and on (and on) and bore you to death…because I’d need a lot of room to list everything that was amazing about Eric and Lisa’s wedding. Suffice it to say that it was one of the most fun weddings that I’ve ever been a part of, but these photos should hopefully get that point across better that any words could. I guess that’s what happens when your reception is basically a 6-hour concert that just happens to have a cake…a cake with a killer bear hanging over it. So, what do you do when the forecast shows rain for your entire wedding day – and the forecast ends up being correct? Well, it always pays to have a good rain plan, and possibly the best rain plan imaginable is to have gigantic floor-to-ceiling windows allowing for a fabulous view of storm clouds blowing through downtown Chicago and into Millennium Park. Part two of that ideal plan is to have the entire modern wing of the Art Institute of Chicago all to yourself, along with a huge covered patio, so that you can party the night away, dry as can be, with the beautiful lights of Chicago in clear view. Sunny days – who needs ‘em? I’ll happily trade this current 106 degree sunny Austin day for a monster rainstorm. Please, please allow me to trade for a monster rainstorm.
