The third annual Austin Ice Cream Festival took place last Saturday at Waterloo Park, and while I attended simply as a fan of ice cream, I always take my camera to events with such potential – and good timing, a friend in the right place and having a camera that looks the part got me front and center with the media for the ice cream eating contest. These guys and gals ate a half gallon in mere minutes, something I’m not quite sure if I admire or not. Nonetheless, it made for good photos…
August 18, 2010 - 8:27 am - Thank you. Those were awesome shots. I am the guy with the tattoos who came in 2nd - polishing off the 1/2 gallon in 4 mins and 6 seconds. I went to the pepto bismo tent this year to sign up. the lady in charge asked me if i had done this before, my mistake was telling yes and how fast. she did tell me infront of my wife that only 60 people entered and that i was "in" for sure. My name wasn't called and did not compete against Joey Chesnut. I would have made it interesting. Last year as you are aware the ice cream was FROZEN SOLID making it difficult to eat. Not sure if you were down there Jake but the ice cream they placed in front of Joey Chesnut was more like mush. He was moving it around before it started and only using 2 fingers.
